The 129th edition of the Boston Marathon took place on April 21st with over 31,000 athletes from around the world participating in the event. This springtime tradition is held in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of Patriots’ Day, marking the American Revolution’s early beginnings just a short distance north of the race route in Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts. Patriots’ Day is woven into the fabric of the Boston Marathon, with the race having been scheduled on the holiday every year since its inception in 1897.

For many competitive runners, this is the biggest race on the calendar. For others, it was the culmination of a journey to check off a bucket list item on their fitness checklist.

Regardless of the why’s for the folks running the streets of Beantown, Muscle & Fitness and GNC showed up to provide their support. Matt Choi was able to chat with some of the Boston Marathon participants, ranging from first time racers to world-class elite runners.

Making There Is a Win On Its Own

To qualify for this race, competitors must take part in a certified marathon event and meet a qualifying time based on time and gender, as determined by the Boston Athletic Association. That is why many people consider being in the race alone a milestone win.

“Coming to Boston is such an achievement in and of itself,” said one athlete at the event’s expo. For other folks taking part, the day of the race is simply the culmination of a journey that included a lot of training. Another runner saw race day as a celebration, which is why there was no pre-race jitters for them.

“There is no need to be nervous. This is the victory lap. We’re going to do it, have a fun time, and if we can crush it with a great time, great.”

Champions Crowned

At the end of the day, this was a race, and those at the finish line saw John Korir of Kenya win the men’s title with a time of 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 45 seconds. That was a historic win because his brother, Wesley won this race in 2012. They are the first brothers to have won the Boston Marathon.

Sharon Lokedi was first on the women’s side with a time of 2:17:22. She set the new record for fastest time by a woman in the race by over two minutes. GNC and Muscle & Fitness congratulate both champions for their incredible victories.

Advice for Future Runners

Choi asked another competitor for advice to those watching that may consider setting the goal of competing in a future edition of this historic race.

“Soak in every moment. When it gets difficult, just remind yourself of why you are running.”
